“Leonkoro” means “lionheart” in Esperanto – a name that could hardly be more fitting for the young string quartet founded in Berlin in 2019. It also nods to Astrid Lindgren’s The Brothers Lionheart – a charming parallel, since this ensemble, too, features two brothers playing side by side: Jonathan and Lukas Schwarz. For their debut at the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, the musicians bring with them two summit works of the repertoire: Mendelssohn’s poignant final string quartet – a musical “Requiem for Fanny” – and Beethoven’s Op. 131, the very piece that prompted Schubert to remark, in awe: “After this – what is left to write?”
